Ronald Reagan
During the campaign, Jimmy Carter spoke of the malaise in the country at the time. Ronald Reagan, all of the sudden, knew that he, Ronald Reagan, had just won the election. He understood that people want optimism and hope in their leaders and in their country.

Gary Hart
He was young, articulate, intelligient, he was from Colorado (It is hard to be humble when you are from Colorado), but he got testy with the media and they watched as he brought himself down. Eight years later the same thing happened, yet that candidate ignored the implications and plowed on ahead. He won.

Stephen Douglas
Brigham Young, a colonizer of the American West, predicted that Stephen Douglas would win the presidency if he stood by the Mormons. Late in the election cycle, Stephen Douglas did not support the Mormons in their Washington endeavors - He lost - Was this the reason - or other factors in place.
